I love Sharks. I LOVE THEM. The way the just cruise the seas, as the ultimate Apex predator. Theyre Like the security guys of the sea. I saw an awesome picture of an Orca and a Mako shark in a whale book i recetly bought, and thought "Oh fuck these 2 are mates, we're screwed" I then read the comment about the image "The Orca later killed and ate the pictured Mako shark" Hmmm. Bummer.
I love watching the Sharks in the Aquarium, sure they look fucking hardcore, Especially that Grey Nurse shark, But on talking to the staff they assure me, that particular shark is scared of bubbles! Prosh!!!
But, Unlike most of my posts so far, This is an angry one. I seriously cannot verbalise how much Shark finning pisses me off. For what? For soup. They are caught, dragged aboard boats or onto Shore, and their fins are sliced off while the shark is still alive, then the poor animal is thrown back into the water, still alive, unable to swim without it's fins, to sink to the bottom to drown. Total Bullshit.
The fear of Sharks is completely ridonkulous as well, C'mon guys! who here is the ultimate ruthless killing machine, Its certainly not the marine dwelling option. As I read on the Sea Shepherd website, more people are killed each year by falling vending machines than by sharks!
Are they for real?
You can do something,If you Havent already, Go and check out the Sea Shepherd website and buy some totally awesome gear or make a donation. They do the best work for marine life, Their Porjects save more lives than any other organisation, because theyre not afraid. check em out on Whale Wars on the discovery channel and give em some love on their website!!

Wow!
This is the first time a Whale calf has been photographed taking its first breath, and it happened in Australian waters! Oh yyyeeeaaah!
Centre for Whale research Scientists Curt and Michelline jenner were checking out Blue Whales along the Ningaloo reef last week when they spotted a large, lone Humpback near the tantabiddi entrance. They thought the Female was pregnant and heading to warmer waters to give birth, as you do, when they noticed a calf was with it.
They said the calf was struggling to stay at the surface, and was swimming in tight clockwise circles with only the tip of its snout potruding, when they saw the mother dive and then reappear beneath the calf, lifting it clear out of the water with its head. The cow held the calf in position for about 10 seconds while it took what they beleive was its first breaths *awwww!!!*
The air filled the little guy with life and he quickly began thrashing his little tail flukes ready to go!
Humpback Whales, Megaptera Novaeangliae, the only Cetacean Ive seen other than our happy little mates the Bottlenose Dolphin. Watching from the national park in Noosa, they breached, frollicked and played, But their play turned defensive when a fishing boat came a little too close to them. Aggressive tail thrashing, Flipper slapping and breaching followed, which was most likely terrifying for the fisherman (who couldnt actually do ANYTHING, including drive away, as you can be fined for using the motor on your boat too close to whales and dolphins) But amazing for us to watch!
Ah blessed Sperm Whales, Physeter Macrocephalus, Not only do they have the largest brain of any animals, Make the loudest sound of all animals, and have a head that makes up one thrid of their body length, They also have one hell of a temper.
Famously, It was a Sperm Whale that sunk the Nantucket whale ship "Essex" on November 20, 1920, as they went about slaughtering other members of the Whale's pod. With the loss of their ship and serious illnesses, The remaining sailors turned to cannibalism. Ironic, yes? The following image is a sketch of the Essex being struck by the whale, drawn by Thomas Nickerson. This Particular whale, for its aggressive antics, inspired one Hreman Melville to Write Moby Dick. Call me Ishmael....
Gnarly right?
Also, The OBVIOUS question is, why is it called a Sperm Whale? Because the whale's enormous head contains a white waxy substance known as Spermaceti, which was initially mistaken for sperm. (in its head... riiiiight) The purpose of this is in theory to assist in diving. Cold water is filtered through the Spermaceti, and the wax solidifies. This increase in density creates a down force of about 40kgs, and enables the whale to dive with minimal effort. Cool.
Theres a really cool Video on youtube of a sperm whale tipping a fishing boat and killing a guy, check it out.

If theres one thing that gets me through a work day, Its knowing that Right Whales are milling in the bay aprox a 3 hour drive from me. And that tomorrow I have the chance to clap eyes on them and their brand new calves!
But, you cant exactly rely on the chance thats youll see them, Just like they call fishing "fishing" not "catching"
Its been so long now since I sat on a surfboard in the unfortunatly named "Tallows Bay" Near Noosa, with the frollicking Humpbacks Breaching, about 200 metres away. My god what a dream that was... I need to see them again.
Anyway, lets look at this...
Southern Right Whale, Eubalaena Australis, Named Right Whales bcause whalers beleived they were the "right" ones to target, due to their slow movement and tendency to stay close to shore.
And I have to of course show the famous Nat Geo image of the Right Whale.... How would you react to this happening?
Other than that, Work has been 'meh' Le Boyfriend has been amazing and startlingly little beer has been consumed. Im contemplating the next stage in my little life, and have no idea which direction to go in next. Im going stir crazy a little, I managed to pull off 4 Acrylic nails yesterday out of boredom and frustration. Hoping life will send me a curve ball. I'm actually ready for that for once.
